Laser Cutting Can't Post

Laser cutting has been relegated to small items, detail trim, and such, due to costs of a full-sized laser platen, and time needed to do the cutting.

Searching around over the past year, I've noticed DESKTOP LASER CUTTERS ... and along with that, a drop in the machining costs of getting your work laser cut.

Their time is not here yet, but soon.

1/4" wood is a bit much for a laser cutter, but 1/8" is about perfect. Trim and models are currently being cut from 1/16 and 1/8 basswood and plywood now. I'm assuming on a smaller platen, like 11x17, which is too small for houses.

Anyone doing work with laser cutters on larger wood projects for architecture? I can see it on the horizon as materials cost (wood) goes up in price, and technology drops, the relative percentage of the cost of cutting goes down... and the cuts and precision would be better than dies that age over time.

Like scanners, printers, photoshop and CAD have changed the world of paper modeling, so too will technology change other areas. This is a great time for modelers, even with the loss of all the mom and pop local hobby shops. Internet and basic tools and technology still let people connect and craft.
